The restored interior of the Notre-Dame of Paris

Sneak preview of the Notre-Dame of Paris

French President Macron was the first to see the interior of the Notre-Dame of Paris. It is the first time since the restoration that the interior is being revealed. The cathedral Notre-Dame was opened to the public on December 8. Have a sneak peak if you’re not able to visit the cathedral yourself!

A Monumental Undertaking

The restoration of Notre-Dame was not only a technical feat but also an emotional journey. Following the fire, the future of this medieval masterpiece seemed uncertain. Yet, with incredible global support—over €840 million raised from 340,000 individuals across 150 countries—the cathedral’s recovery became a symbol of collective determination.

Here’s how some of the greatest challenges were tackled:

  1. Structural Stability:
The first priority was stabilizing the damaged structure. The collapse of sections of the roof and the iconic spire (flèche) posed immense challenges. Engineers developed innovative solutions, such as a wooden framework to prevent further deterioration during reconstruction.

  2. Preserving Authenticity:
Every stone, stained glass window, and carved detail was meticulously analyzed. Restoration teams relied on historical techniques and authentic materials, including limestone from the same quarries used in the 12th century.

  3. Logistical Marvel:
Coordinating hundreds of skilled artisans—including stonecutters, carpenters, and glassworkers—was a colossal task. Many of these crafts are now rare, adding an almost medieval charm to the restoration process.

  4. Meeting Tight Deadlines:
In 2019, President Macron set the ambitious goal of reopening the cathedral within five years. Against all odds, the team achieved this, a testament to their unwavering dedication.

White is the new Black

Visitors can look forward to an awe-inspiring experience. What immediately strikes me (and probably others who have been here before) is the fresh, almost white interior. Before 2019, the walls and vaults were darker, sometimes even blackened from years of candle burning.

The interior has now been restored to the state it was in after the last major restoration, in the 19th century under Viollet-le-Duc. He was controversial because he incorporated his own vision into his renovations and even added elements to monuments. That was absolutely unacceptable at the time.

Notre-Dame: A Symbol of Resilience

The reopening of Notre-Dame stands as a powerful symbol of renewal, embodying not just architectural brilliance but also the spirit of global unity and the deep respect for cultural heritage. For President Macron, it marks the dawn of a new era, with this iconic monument serving as a beacon of hope and resilience. The project celebrates human ingenuity and perseverance, offering inspiration to the world and reaffirming the enduring strength of shared history.
