Gothic cathedrals are some of the most iconic and beautiful buildings in the world, and France is home to some of the finest examples of this style. I already visited many of them in my live, but I still have some cathedrals to go :). In this article, we’ll take a look at 5 Gothic cathedrals in France that are definitely worth a visit, and I tell you why.

#1 Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris

Notre-Dame de Paris, or Our Lady of Paris, is one of the most famous Gothic cathedrals in the world. Located on the Île de la Cité in the heart of Paris, this cathedral was completed in the early 14th century and has been a landmark of the city ever since. The Notre-Dame is known for its stunning stained-glass windows, intricate carvings, and iconic flying buttresses. In 2019, a devastating fire destroyed the cathedral’s roof and spire, but restoration work is currently underway to restore it to its former glory. It is said that in December 2024, you can visit the interior again. Until then, you’ll have to do it with digital visits. If you go to Paris, head for the beautiful Saint-Denis, the birthplace of Gothic architecture.

In Victor Hugo’s novel, “The Hunchback of Notre-Dame,” Quasimodo, the deformed bell-ringer, lived in the cathedral and became a symbol of love and acceptance.

#2 Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Chartres

When you arrive by car, you can already spot the cathedral from miles away. It is situated on a hill in the town of Chartres, about 80 km southwest of Paris. This cathedral is famous for its well-preserved stained-glass windows, which date back to the 13th century. Chartres Cathedral is also known for its beautiful flying buttresses, which help to support the weight of the building and are a hallmark of Gothic architecture.

Chartres Cathedral is a true masterpiece of Gothic architecture and is considered by many to be one of the best-preserved examples of the style in the world. Its stained-glass windows are simply breathtaking!

Chartres Cathedral is also known for its “Labyrinth,” a circular pattern on the floor of the cathedral that was used as a tool for meditation and prayer during the Middle Ages.

#3 Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Reims

Notre Dame de Reims is located about 160 km northeast of Paris. This cathedral was completed in the early 14th century and is known for its impressive stained-glass windows, intricate carvings, and beautiful facade. Reims Cathedral was also the site of many important events in French history, including the coronation of several French kings.

Reims Cathedral is a stunning example of Gothic architecture and is steeped in history. Its impressive stained-glass windows and intricate carvings are sure to leave a lasting impression. During the summer, a spectacular lightshow is free to watch.

Fun fact

Reims Cathedral is also known for its “Smiling Angel,” a statue of an angel on the cathedral’s facade that is said to bring good luck to those who touch it.

#4 Cathédrale Notre-Dame d'Amiens

Amiens Cathedral is located in the city of Amiens, about 130 km north of Paris. This cathedral was completed in the early 13th century and is known for its impressive size and beautiful stained-glass windows. Amiens Cathedral is also famous for its elaborate carved decoration, including sculptures of biblical scenes and figures from classical mythology.

Why visit

Amiens Cathedral is an impressive example of Gothic architecture. The cathedral’s nave is known for its exceptional height, reaching a height of 141 feet, earning the title of “The Tallest Nave in France.”

Fun fact

The Amiens Cathedral is so large that its nave alone could fit Notre-Dame de Paris inside it twice!

#5 Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Bourges

Finally, we must not forget the Cathedral of Bourges. Built between the 12th and 13th centuries, it is one of the most remarkable Gothic churches in France. The cathedral’s exterior is adorned with beautiful rose windows and arches, creating a stunning backdrop for photographs. But it’s inside where things truly get interesting. Visitors can explore the crypt and the Chapel of Saint Ursula. 

 

Countless stories of the cathedral’s history await, including the legend of Saint Ursula and her eleven thousand virgins, preserved in the crypt. Here, you will also find a collection of medieval artworks and relics. Another highlight is the vaulted ceiling in the nave, adorned with impressive frescoes.

The construction of the Bourges Cathedral was so well-regarded that its impressive height became the standard for measuring the height of other Gothic cathedrals in France.
