Did you know… not Saint-Denis, but Sens is the world’s first gothic cathedral?

While Saint-Denis is celebrated as the birthplace of the Gothic style, it was originally an abbey church and basilica. ‘Sens Cathedral holds the true title of the first Gothic cathedral in history!’, claims Baptiste Gateau. We spoke to him for an interview, published today at churchheritage.eu.

The construction of Saint-Denis and Sens Cathedral started only a few years apart. In Saint-Denis, Suger began with the western facade in 1135, moving to the Gothic choir in 1140, which was completed four years later. “Recent studies date the start of construction of Sens Cathedral to between 1130 and 1135,” says Baptiste.

The construction of the main building was completed around 1164, while the western façade was added in the 12th century. This makes Sens a bit older than Saint-Denis. Some even claim that Abbot Suger visited Sens’s construction site, drawing inspiration from the six-part ribbed vaults and large stained glass windows, but no evidence has been found to support this.

The Sens cathedral had a major influence on the spread of the Gothic architectural style. In 1144, the Archbishop of Sens invited a hundred bishops to the consecration of the new cathedral, further accelerating the rapid spread of the Gothic style. Within a decade, most French cathedrals were rebuilt or expanded in the Gothic style.

The iconic Dom Tower is the symbol of Utrecht, standing at a towering 112.32 meters, it’s the tallest church tower in the Netherlands.

Its foundation stone was laid in 1321, and after over 60 years of construction, it was completed in 1382.

On the first of August 1674, a heavy storm destroyed the nave of the Dom Church, leaving the tower detached from the church, a situation that remains to this day.

Over the years, the tower has undergone several restorations, with the current restoration set to continue until the summer of 2024.

The scaffolding is now finally being removed, allowing visitors to climb to the top once again, where the view is absolutely breathtaking!

The Abbey Church of Villers is the most impressive structure of the former Cistercian abbey in Villers-la-Ville, Belgium.

Construction began in 1197 in the Romanesque style and was completed around 1267 in Gothic style. With a length of 94 meters and a height of 23 meters, the church stands as a striking example of Cistercian architecture.

A distinctive feature of the Abbey Church is the use of oculi —small round windows—combined with tall, elongated windows in the choir, which creates a unique play of light within the structure. The design emphasizes simplicity, with minimal decoration, in keeping with Cistercian ideals of austerity and spirituality.

At its peak in the 13th century, the abbey housed around 100 monks and 300 lay brothers. The church served as the central point for daily and spiritual life, with the community observing seven prayer services each day, including one at night.

The abbey was abandoned after the French Revolution in 1796, leading to its eventual ruin. Despite its current state, the Abbey Church remains a remarkable example of medieval architecture and draws numerous visitors each year.

Although I prefer Gothic above Neo-gothic, this church is really worth a visit. The St. Laurentius Church in Saarburg is a historic Catholic church located in the picturesque town of Saarburg in the Rhineland-Palatinate region of Germany. This church, dedicated to Saint Lawrence, was built in the 19th century, around 1854-1856, to replace an older church on the same site.

The St. Laurentius Church is a fine example of neo-Gothic style, with high pointed arches, stained glass windows, and slender towers that give it a Gothic appearance. This style was common for churches in the 19th century, inspired by medieval Gothic design.

Inside, you’ll find refined sculptures and paintings, especially around the altar. The interior also includes several interesting historical details and an organ that is frequently used for church music.

History

The convent was founded in 1389 by the nobleman and military leader Nuno Álvares Pereira, a key figure in Portugal’s struggle for independence from Castile. Pereira was a devoted military and religious figure, and the Carmo Convent was built as a Carmelite monastery. Architecturally, it combines elements of Portuguese Gothic with the first tentative influences of the late Gothic, with impressive pointed arches and airy vaults that gave the church an almost ethereal appearance.

Earthquake of 1755

For several centuries, the convent remained a thriving religious site, but this abruptly changed due to the devastating earthquake on November 1, 1755. This earthquake, accompanied by a tsunami and fires, destroyed much of Lisbon and left the Carmo Convent almost entirely in ruins. The church’s roof collapsed, and only the impressive Gothic arches remained, giving the convent the iconic, ruinous character it has today.

After the earthquake, the convent was never fully restored. Instead, the remains were left standing as a memorial to the earthquake, becoming a symbol of Lisbon’s trauma and rebuilding. Today, the ruins provide a unique open-air experience where visitors can walk beneath the open sky and admire the original Gothic architecture.

The Western Portals of the Cathedral of Amiens

The Cathedral of Amiens, partially destroyed by a fire in 1218, was rebuilt starting around 1220, beginning with the nave. By 1235, the nave was completed, including the portals on the west facade, which serve as the main entrances to the cathedral.

The considerable amount of sculptural decoration once featured colored depictions, which, although no longer visible today, gave a vibrant impression of color to the cathedral. This reconstruction and the impression of how the portals in Amiens might have looked evoke a sense of visual austerity for generations who grew up with the idea of cathedrals as unadorned. In the Middle Ages, such brightly colored spectacles were an important part of the cathedrals’ appeal. The colorful portals provided a stark contrast to the hardships of daily life and offered a spiritual experience.

The Portals

On the trumeau of the central portal is a statue of Christ, flanked by twelve prophets, six on each side. Above in the tympanum of the central portal is a depiction of Christ surrounded by beings representing the twelve apostles and four great prophets (Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, and Daniel).

The southern (right) portal features the Madonna and Child, flanked by statues depicting, on the right (south side), the Annunciation, Mary and Elizabeth, Mary and Simeon, and the martyrs of the diocese of Amiens. In the tympanum, we see the history of Saint Firmin.

The Basilica of Santa Croce in Florence is a masterpiece of Gothic architecture in Italy, with notable elements of the earlier Italian Romanesque style.

Construction of the church began in 1294 under the guidance of the famous architect Arnolfo di Cambio, who was also involved in the construction of the Duomo and the Palazzo Vecchio in Florence. The choice of Arnolfo as the architect was decisive for the Gothic style of the basilica.

Santa Croce was originally built for the Franciscan order, a movement that advocated simplicity and humility, which is reflected in the design of the church.

The construction of the main structure was completed around 1385, although further expansions and embellishments continued into the 15th century.

The façade of Santa Croce is particularly remarkable. However, it was not completed until the 19th century. The current Neo-Gothic façade was designed by the architect Niccolò Matas and completed in 1863, featuring bright polychromy in red, green, and white marble, typical for many Florentine churches.

Santa Croce has a Latin cross plan with a spacious, rectangular nave and two side aisles. The ceiling is a typical Gothic ribbed vault.

Don’t forget to look up: the chapels and the choir are richly decorated with frescoes by Giotto and his school, who revolutionized painting with their natural, expressive human figures and vibrant colors, forming a sharp contrast with the previously static Byzantine style.

The basilica also contains a number of chapels such as the famous Pazzi Chapel, designed by Filippo Brunelleschi in the 15th century (yes, the same one who designed the dome of the Duomo of Florence!).

Santa Croce is also known as the “Temple of Italian Glories” because of the many tombs of famous Italians such as Michelangelo, Galileo, Machiavelli, and Rossini.

Thus, Santa Croce is not only an important religious and architectural monument but also a mausoleum of great cultural and historical significance.

The striking green color, along with white and pink, comes from the marble used, specifically sourced from the Tuscan region.

These materials were chosen not only for their aesthetics but also to create a visual unity with Giotto’s bell tower and the baptistery.

The construction of Saint-Étienne in Caen, also known as the Abbaye-aux-Hommes, began in 1066.

This beautiful Romanesque abbey was founded by William the Conqueror, who was also laid to rest here (disclaimer: only one bone is what is left of his body). Originally intended as a monastery for Benedictine monks, the building reflects the power and wealth of the Norman dukes.

Over the centuries, the abbey has been carefully maintained and restored, making it one of the best-preserved examples of Romanesque architecture in France.

World War II: Destruction and Safe Haven

During World War II, the abbey played a crucial role; it served as a refuge for the citizens of Caen during the intense bombings of the Battle of Normandy. Although the abbey suffered significant damage from the bombings, it provided protection and hope in a time of great need.

Between the late 12th century and the early 13th c

Between the late 12th century and the early 13th century, the flying buttress underwent rapid development. Architectural issues forced master builders to further refine the design. Cumbersome buttresses with flying buttresses (as at Saint-Remi in Reims) evolved into more thoughtful construction during this time.

In Chartres Cathedral, which dates from about 1195-1220, you can see this well (I took this photo about 17 years ago). After the fire of old cathedral in 1194, new construction was begun, with the Cathedral of Soissons as an important example.

In Chartres, the lower flying buttresses are connected to the wall at the birth of the vault. The massive lower flying buttresses are actually twofold; each contains two flights, the space between them is occupied by an open arcade, complete with columns with capitals, which extends the design of columnar supports to the flying buttresses insofar as they touch the church wall.

The architect knew he was doing more here than was really necessary. He could work with open flying buttresses because they primarily demonstrate strength, and only secondarily serve to stabilize the building as a whole and support vaults.
