Reims’ Regalia: A Free Light Show at the Cathedral

The Cathedral of Reims stands as a prime example of French High Gothic architecture. Its colossal stained glass windows fill the interior with radiant sunlight. Even outside, the cathedral is splendidly illuminated, both in winter (as seen in the photo) and summer. This year’s light show is centered around the ‘Regalia,’ the symbols of kingship, and the connection is rich.

Reims: Coronations City

For nearly a millennium, 33 French rulers were crowned at the Cathedral Notre-Dame de Reims. A significant coronation occurred around 1498 when King Clovis ascended, marking the inception of the French kingdom. Reims earned the title of ‘coronation city,’ hosting numerous coronations.

The ‘Gallery of Kings’ now showcases 56 statues of French monarchs, with Clovis rightfully at the center by the baptismal font.

Detail of sculpture: the baptisme of Clovis. 8 figures are visible, Clovis being baptized. 1 figure has a crown in his hands, ready to crown Clovis.

Tip: When you book a tour of the towers, you’ll discover a few statues that are no longer in use. An excellent opportunity to closely examine these 4.5-meter-tall kings!
